Beautiful Data | September-October 2014

$7.95

We are awash in data, which accounts for some of the excitement surrounding the possibilities of better data visualization. But attempts to make our data more accessible and enlightening are nothing new. The September-October issue presents some images from a recent British Library exhibition showing that our desire to use data to communicate ideas is centuries old. Our digital revolution offers a leap forward in the tools available. But it is just another iteration in the evolution of data storytelling. The issue also looks at the future of energy use, exploring existing energy systems' resistance to change, and proposing possible ways to alter that stasis. To illustrate the difficulties in predicting energy futures, we display magazine ads from the 1940s and 1950s to show how we once imagined the world around the corner. We got it wrong.
